What Should I Bring at Christmas?

Christmas is awesome, but throw in multiple generations and a bunch of family members who normally live apart and it it’s inevitably going to be slightly chaotic. If you’re lucky enough to have escaped the hosting duties this year, here's your go-to guide for what to pack, how to survive (and enjoy!) the family festivities.

The Clothing Essentials

First things first - comfort is key. Pack:

  • At least one "fancy" outfit for Christmas dinner (think something that looks great but won't cut off your circulation after too much turkey)
  • Comfy loungewear for those epic post-meal relaxation sessions
  • A jumper that's festive but not so over-the-top that you’ll be embarrassed when your cousin posts it on Instagram in January.

The Gift-Related Necessities

  • Gifts (obviously!). A top tip is that these are actually easier to transport unwrapped, so if you know you’ll have time to wrap them when you arrive do that.
  • Gift bags, wrapping paper, scissors, labels and tape.
  • A generic gift card as a backup present for when someone you forgot about drops by. (This happens at my Mother-in-laws every year as she invites hundreds of her friends round to inspect her grandchildren).

The Good Guest Offering

  • A food or drink offering. Check with your hosts what’s most useful to avoid doubling up. (And then also bring an unexpected treat as a thank you).

  • SOME FUN! Whether it’s a quiz, a board game or a creative activity, something to bring everyone together will make you the most valuable guest of the season. Obviously we recommend Two Faced for hilarious fun time, but anything that can get people connecting and interacting will do.

Bonus Survival Kit

  • A sense of humour and patience.
  • If you can’t bring above I also highly recommend a dog. My partner and I use “I think the dog needs a walk” as secret code for “I need to get out of here or I’m going to swear at my mother”.

Joking aside, remember Christmas is about connection, laughter, and creating memories - even if those memories include Uncle Bob's questionable jokes and Mum’s overdone sprouts.

May your luggage be light, your spirits be bright, and your family time be just the right mix of sweet and slightly chaotic. 🎄🎁
